Upon arriving in America in 1989, Polish immigrants Mark and Alexandra Dembicki were ready to get to work making the most of their new home. The couple had always dreamed of starting their own business. After three years of Mark working in construction and Alexandra in food service, the couple made the bold decision to invest in a small property on 3300 North Central Avenue.

In 1992, Alex’s Deli opened its doors to clients. The original business sold an assortment of deli products. After a couple of years, Mark and Alexandra noticed one product selling at an astounding rate: pierogi. The company’s handmade pierogi had resonated with the locals, and became the deli’s best seller. Soon, many customers who had previously only been able to get handmade pierogi by contracting with a “Professional Babcia,” became regular customers at the deli. Thus, in the year 1995, Alex’s Deli changed its name to Alexandra Foods Company.

Mark and Alexandra hit the road, visiting businesses throughout the city, looking for clients interested in selling their product. The company created its first retail package. Little by little, word spread about the company’s delicious product. Alexandra’s pierogi began appearing in delis and markets throughout the Chicagoland area.

After a short period of time, customers began expressing interest in purchasing many other related foods. Subsequent years witnessed the appearance of a number of popular products. The company began producing Silesian dumplings (“kluski śląskie”) in 1997, followed by finger dumplings (“kopytka”) and cheese blintzes (“naleśniki”) in 1998. One product of notable mention are pyzy. The company takes much pride in its pyzy, as almost no establishments exist that make this product.

In 2005, Alexandra Foods Co. gained status as a USDA inspected company. The company is also regularly inspected by the FDA and Chicago Health Department.
